1. Confirm the bike and owner
- Compare the identifier on the frame with the title and registration. Resolve discrepancies before payment.
- Ask about loans, theft recovery, crashes, repairs and modifications. Request available service records.
- For an electric motorcycle, confirm battery, charger and replacement-part support with the manufacturer.
2. Book an independent inspection
Use a motorcycle specialist, especially for modified or off-road machines. A seller’s video is useful context, not an inspection.
- Ask the shop to assess tires, wheels, brakes, controls, lights, fluids, frame, suspension and stands.
- Ask which engine, charging-system or battery diagnostics are appropriate for this model.
- Check the maintenance schedule and budget for any overdue work. Only arrange a test ride after licensing, insurance, safety and the owner’s permission are settled.
3. Confirm intended use and paperwork
A dirt bike or electric off-road motorcycle is not automatically eligible for street registration. Confirm the exact vehicle’s status and title-transfer requirements with your DMV before relying on it for road use.[2]
4. Agree on the handover
- Resolve any lender-held title and payoff process directly with the lender before setting a closing date.
- Agree on payment and independently verify instructions with your bank or payment provider.
- Record the price, identifier, known modifications, keys, charger and included parts in the sale documents.
- Arrange suitable transport if registration, insurance, condition or riding eligibility is not settled.
Frequently asked questions
Does an inspection checklist replace a mechanic?
No. It helps organize questions. A qualified shop should assess the actual motorcycle and recommend appropriate tests. MSF provides a separate pre-ride checklist.[3]
Is an electric motorcycle the same as a Class 1, 2 or 3 e-bike?
No. Do not use an e-bike class label to establish a motorcycle’s classification or road eligibility. Confirm the model and current configuration with the manufacturer and relevant authorities.
