The short version

What to know before you act

  • Prepare ownership, service and modification records before listing.
  • Explain road or off-road status without promising eligibility you have not verified.
  • Confirm payment, title release and included equipment before handing over the bike.

1. Get the records together

  • Locate the title, current registration and your bike’s identifier. Resolve missing or mismatched paperwork early.
  • If financed, ask the lender for the payoff amount, expiration date and title-release procedure. Arrange how buyer funds and any balance will be handled.
  • Collect service invoices, recall work, modification receipts and any transferable coverage terms. Redact private account and payment details from shared copies.

2. Make the listing useful

  • Photograph both sides, the controls, tires, condition details and included equipment.
  • List aftermarket parts, tuning and known issues. State how the motorcycle has been used.
  • For electric models, identify the battery and approved charger. Report available diagnostics without inventing battery-health figures.
  • State whether the bike is currently street registered, off-road registered or has unresolved paperwork. Encourage the buyer to confirm intended use with the relevant authority.

3. Plan the viewing

  • Offer a viewing in a suitable, safe location and allow a buyer-arranged independent inspection.
  • Set test-ride arrangements only after permission, rider eligibility and insurance questions are resolved. A deposit alone does not establish coverage.
  • Confirm exactly which keys, original parts, manuals, charger and accessories are included.

4. Complete the sale and notification

Follow the title authority’s instructions for signatures and any lender release. Keep copies of the completed sale documents and confirm payment with your provider.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the car seller’s smog checklist?

Not for a California motorcycle: DMV lists motorcycles as exempt from the registration smog check. Check the actual motorcycle’s other paperwork requirements and your state’s rules.[2]

Can I advertise a warranty as transferable?

Confirm the provider’s written terms, remaining coverage and any transfer fee or deadline first. If unconfirmed, say so.
