The short version

What to know before you act

  • Describe the bike you are selling today, including changed parts.
  • Share what you know about the battery; label missing information as unknown.
  • Prepare records, equipment and app-transfer steps before the viewing.

1. Gather the basics

  • Find the purchase receipt, frame serial, exact model and any service invoices. Bike Index explains common serial-number locations.[2]
  • Make a list of included keys, charger, locks, racks and original parts.
  • If there is finance or a purchase-plan balance, confirm your sale obligations with the provider before advertising.
  • Redact payment-account details and unrelated personal information from copies you share.

2. Make condition easy to understand

  • Photograph both sides, the controls, tires, wear and included equipment.
  • List the motor, controller, battery and other modifications by brand or part name where known. Factory specs may no longer apply.
  • State battery age if known, charging issues, repairs and available diagnostics. Do not turn an estimated range into a battery-health claim.
  • Identify the charger and confirm it is manufacturer-approved for this bike. Check CPSC recalls and follow any stop-use or remedy instructions before offering the bike for use.[1]

3. Set a useful asking price and plan the viewing

  • Compare the same model and configuration, allowing for condition, included equipment and parts support.
  • Prepare the records for a buyer-arranged e-bike-shop inspection.
  • Agree on a safe viewing and test-ride arrangement. Use a parent or guardian to coordinate a younger rider’s transaction.
  • If demonstrating charging, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and stay present. Do not charge while sleeping.[1]

4. Hand over the bike, not your account

  • Confirm payment with your bank or payment provider using contact details you find independently.
  • Prepare a dated receipt with the price, frame serial, known changes and included equipment; both parties retain a copy.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s app-unpairing or ownership-transfer process. Remove your saved location and personal data where supported; do not share passwords.
  • Give the buyer the agreed records, keys, charger and parts. Mark the listing sold once the sale is complete.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know the battery’s health?

Say that it is unknown. Share the age, history and diagnostics you actually have, and allow a qualified shop to assess it. Do not guess a percentage.

Can I say a modified bike is street legal?

Only describe eligibility you have confirmed for the actual configuration and jurisdiction. Having pedals or an old class label does not settle the question.
